Kickstarter disturbance in the force

“The world has changed. I see it in the water. I feel it in the Earth. I smell it in the air.” Galadriel said it well but in the parlance of Star Wars, I feel a disturbance in the force and it’s convergence is Kickstarter. It seems we are moving into a place where good “art” be it television, movies, podcasting or comics can develop and survive unfettered by outside intrusions. It is true that fan action, innovation and hard work are not new but there has been a building process that is now reaching some of it’s true potential.

Of course many examples of what is becoming more widespread now come to mind. Zachery Levi’s Chuck got a fifth season, Firefly got a damn movie, and going back even further Kevin Smith made Clerks for just $20,000 basically on pure will alone. But now we have two advantages over our fore bearers, technology and community. Modern technology means that anybody can be a content creator, one can literally shoot or record and upload or live stream to the internet from our phones now. But there is also effectively a new nation that exists solely on the internet without borders and baggage that just wants to see and help develop new and interesting projects. An ethos that is particularly emphasised within the “Nerd” community, people want cool stuff and want to help it exist.

Kickstarter Collage

So let’s talk about Kickstarter, If you aren’t aware Kickstarter is a website that devotes itself to helping an incredible range of projects find funding from people across the world via the internet. Most recently it has drawn the attention of mainstream media because of a number of “high profile” campaigns that broke all sorts of records for Kickstarter. First of these was the Veronica Mars Movie, which made more money than any other Kickstarter campaign in history, a sum of $5,702,153. Veronica Mars was a TV show that I honestly wasn’t a fan of, it was set in the fictional town of Neptune, California and starred Kristen Bell as the title character. A student who progresses from high school to college while moonlighting as a private investigator under tutelage from her detective father.

The Veronica Mars campaign showed a almost Whedonite/Brown Coat levels of fan fervor and it was amazing to see how fans could have such a dramatic Impact and direct in put into something they loved. This was to be followed in media coverage by a passion project from Actor/Director Zach Braff (Probably best known as JD from the television show Scrubs) entitled “wish I was here”. Braff described the new film he proposed to make as a sequel in tone to his successful movie Garden State(Which unlike Veronica Mars I was a massive fan of) with no compromises. In fact the driving force in his campaign was to give him a chance to make his vision without corporate intervention, a thing he was a capable of doing before, in garden state, thanks to a private citizen who believed in Zach fronting a large amount of the costs. This idea of creative freedom is a sentiment that is beginning to sweep through the industry.

Another Campaign that brought some controversy(which in this case was stupid) to the system was that of penny arcade podcast’s, entitled Penny Arcade DLC. Penny Arcade is a company set up by Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik. Initially to write a web comic, one of the only to be successful in becoming a business, but has now diversified to include many things including gaming conventions across the world called PAX (Penny Arcade Expo). Their Kickstarter was to raise money to fund a continuation of Podcast’s that they had previously made. Some people (henceforth known as idiots) saw this as some sought of money grabbing exercise that was not needed to create the content they promised. Not at all realising the time involved in producing these new podcast’s would be unfeasible in a large company(workload wise) made up of so few individuals, as is the case at penny arcade, unless it could be sensibly monetised. These new podcast’s will be available soon  but if you can’t wait for that or your stuck waiting for either the Mars or Braff projects it might be worthwhile to check out the old podcast’s here.

Of course there is plenty of opportunity to abuse the Kickstarter system, I shudder to imagine a montage of famous people saying give money to Sony or McDonald’s or Coca cola for example. It is sad that but true some people will do anything if it’s Celebrity endorsed. But ignore all that, there’s always gonna be the bad one’s in the bunch, What I want to champion here is the rise of “Art” unfettered by outside influence of the studio and other manifestations of the corporate. But it is also key to realise Kickstarter is a tool and is not the only force for this new movement.

The Kevin Smith Machine

If you’ve not guessed the person I want to talk about next is Writer/Director Kevin Smith. Partly because what he’s involved in right now and what he has done in the past is so interesting, but also because in many ways he is a symbol of the changes that I’m talking about and want to promote. In many ways Kevin did with his first movie Clerks what people are only just realising they can do now, and for him it was significantly harder. He made a movie for just $20,000! and with the hard work of him and his friends and a whole load of credit card debt he forced his way into the public consciousness.

In many ways Kevin Smith has now returned to his routes after moving away from the big Hollywood flicks of his past. Particularly the Podcast network he has created, or Smodcast as it is known, is a well of entertainment built off of self production. He also self funded a horror movie called Red State and runs across the country to talk to his fans. His latest project, Jay and Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie, is an animated feature produced by his long time friend Jason Mewes for almost Clerks money at $69,000. He is currently touring across the United states with the movie, which if you’re lucky enough to live there you can see date’s/places here. No word as yet when the international release might be or where one could see it but it definitely looks like fun, check out the trailer.

But more important than helping your favourite TV show getting made into a movie or going on the road to see Super Groovy Cartoon Movie, is this. Use Kevin Smith as a inspiration, go out and do it whatever creative urge you have the tools are there to help you. Or instead help someone else do it, if you have that friend that keeps procrastinating and you believe in their work, help them realise it. The chance is their the future is now go forth and be entertaining.

The Future

PS4 Vs Xbox One, The fight for the souls of Gamers

Xbox vs Playstation

So If you haven’t been living under a rock for the last few months you probably heard about the Playstation 4, coming this holiday season. You might also be aware of the Playstation meeting streamed live to the world where the new console was officially revealed and as of last week so has the new release from Microsoft, Xbox One. So now that the immediate fallout from those presentations is over here’s our two cents, a quick round up for anyone who happened to miss them as well as some general next-gen chat.

So seeing as they “came out” to the world first lets talk about Sony’s Playstation 4. The highly anticipated Playstation meeting started with all that you expect from these type of event’s actually, the same was also true of Microsoft and Xbox as well. Initially plenty of bullshit to swim through (mainly for developers/investors i’m guessing). The inevitable “Come to the dark side we have cookies” speech partnered with plenty of punchy buzz words like “synergy” and “Dynamic” aimed at the industry and the customer as though we were all autistic 12 year old boys, but I digress.

PS4 Banner

The playstation meeting started out with heavy duty pimping out of the PsVita, trying to get people excited with the promise of something new later this year (maybe at E3 ?). They suggested that it will function like WII U remote for the new console, and also allow for swapping games from the television screen to vita and back. But with nothing much more to say than that came across more like, “Please Please buy one!” Then it was on to looking at new controller for PS4 unsurprisingly called the Dualshock 4, equipped with a touch pad, headphone jack, Share button (more on that later) and new integrated movement software like that currently used in the PS3’s move controller. This new addition to the main controller is to work in partner with a new stereo camera which will  track its 3D location, so we get to flail some more in the future, woohoo…

Playstation went on to talk about how digital copies of games will be playable during download and you will be able to power down and power up the console returning to the game at the point of departure. Both seem nothing but good. After that it was onto the industry’s new favourite, social networking. Playstation has new partnerships with facebook and ustream to add to the “community” in gaming, more than anything this made me wonder how bad Twitch TV must feel having missed out on this to ustream. The new PS4 will also allow you to live stream to Youtube, although how long you can share/record footage was unspecific. There is a new functionality which allows you to Jump in to take over other peoples games. This obviously could be helpful for you and me but I think its probably aimed more at Indy developers, twinned with the other function allowing you to watch someone else’s gameplay.

Finally lets talk about the most important thing, games. Unfortunately PS3 and PS network games will not be transferable to PS4 and if you want to play them on the new console you will have to re-buy copies probably through their cloud system. As disappointing as this is within a year of launch  no one will care about backwards compatibility, and in the mean time why not just hold onto your old console. So on to the new games, we got see footage from Killzone, Infamous, the witness and a new capcom IP deep down(working title). And unlike other people(who will be mentioned later) we got lots of new gameplay footage. All of it looked very pretty particularly the witness and Killzone and Infamous left us gagging to play them more.

Chris Metzen Blizzard

As well as that we got a very interesting presentation by Square Enix who essentially said nothing but “something new is coming at E3” maybe a new final fantasy? But lets not hold our breath after the latest installations of that franchise Square will have to do a lot to bring me back on board. One of the shocking occurrences was the arrival of Chris Metzen from Blizzard, upon who’s arrival the room collectively flipped a shit. However it was to be a disappointment, no project titan or anything new in fact it was, as many had theorised was coming, the announcement of the port to console for Diablo 3. Funnily enough blizzard was to dog us again at pax east with a “new game” announcement, which turned out to be a free to play World of Warcraft card game.

However the biggest shock to me from Playstation was the arrival of representatives from Bungie (Halo developers). Announcing a new IP called “Project Destiny” in partnership with Activision, it is to be a “shared world first person shooter” which will have  exclusive content for Playstation. Sounding close to Halo, one of the few draws for Xbox over Playstation made me feel kinda sorry for Microsoft. The disappointment concerning PS4 would come from the fact that we never (and still haven’t) seen what the console actually looks like, which is more than a little worrying and an uncertain release date of “the holiday season”. But as we will see Playstation was not the only ones peddling some disappointment.

 xbox one

Xbox definitely didn’t have the problem of not showing the console, in fact its large, very  large imagine a VHS player from the 90’s and you get the idea. Also if the opening minutes of the presentation were anything to go by its important to know It’s always watching you…

What was instantly noticeable from Xbox was that they took a very long time to even mention the word game, instead Xbox started clearly with the intention to show off its new functionality. This included a new vocal control system that recognises a user and opens a personalised home screen upon command as well as allowing to do many other things vocally which were formally control based. The aforementioned home screen shows games, music and film you own and supposedly remembers what you last played from that and where you were within them.

Verbal commands supposedly allow you to swap  from live TV to and from any game your playing, or film your watching etc. There was also a cool demonstration of the connect technology allowing you to command the console minority report style with gestures (but i’ll believe it when I see it working for myself). Xbox one is also supposedly capable of running multiple programs alongside each other like a PC, they showed watching a movie alongside a Skype call to demonstrate this. All these features look very swish even sci-fi but how much actually works and wasn’t pre-rendered is unknown. But also all it really demonstrates is lots of functions available elsewhere and seems more like a fancy cable box than a gaming system.

Xbox One specs

Next we were promised game information after the long look at Xbox One Cable box features, but what we got was instead was first a technology rundown(full specs comparison between PS4 and Xbox One can be seen in a table at the bottom). The new Xbox will not only utilise the Connect but it will now be integral to it and will also have “smart glass” technology to utilise Smart Phones and tablets in concert with the console. It will also have a blue ray player and its high end graphics will require a high end television to appreciate, both seemingly money in the back pocket of Sony, but none the less good news.

The new connect 1080p HD camera is supposedly capable of seeing weight disposition, shoulder and wrist rotation, plus other cool stuff. But with the new console never really turning off and it always watching you definitely has an air of Skynet. This fear was not alleviated by the somewhat weird brag that the 300,00 servers for new Xbox live was more computing power than the entire world in 1999. The global map shown of all the servers there seemed like a plan for world domination at the same time as being a laughable statistic that was like “remember a very long time ago, well we’re better than that now.

Now that they were done with the cable box features and the new connect/Skynet camera they would finally start talking about games…well sort of. Starting with the statement “Introducing Andrew Wilson from Electronic Arts” had many gamers reaching for a razor blade and unfortunately Andrew did nothing to alleviate those worries. From the first mention of the new “special relationship” between Xbox and EA  we felt dread reminiscent of when the same term was used to refer to the relationship between the Bush administration in the USA and the Labour party one in the UK. We felt like screaming so your going to ruin Xbox and Star Wars, thanks EA (In case you didn’t know they just bought the rights to Star Wars games from Disney).

The EA presentation went on to show Lots of pre-rendered footage with no actual gameplay even when it was promised on stage. There will be Special Fifa 14 content for Xbox if your a big fan of that franchise, but otherwise nothing of note. The comapny Remedy came in with a new IP called Quantum break. Again there was no gameplay, this time we were to be confused by weird live action footage of a young girl and a ship crashing into a bridge (God know what it’s actually about).Coolest information for me, ironically like at Playstation came from Halo developers. Not a new Halo game but in fact a new live action Halo TV series directed by none other than Steven Spielberg in concert with 343 industries. Which will apparently only be available on Xbox, however I imagine the way the internet is it will be pirated within a second.

Call of Duty Ghost Dog

This was to be followed by an even weirder alliance than that with EA, another “special relationship” with the NFL. That’s right with the National Football League(American football if you didn’t know), What this is about is unknown to me but definitely suggests a target market of the frat douche bag, which explain the lack of gaming talk throughout. Infinity ward came in to seal the deal on the frat house market with the exclusive Xbox release of Call Of Duty Ghosts, with dogs and arm hair according to the again pre-rendered footage with no gameplay.

since the Xbox One presentation it has also come out(although slowly and inefficiently) that Xbox one will have to hook up to the internet at least once a day for a few hours. Although you will still be able to play single player games should your internet die, supposedly. Also no more borrowing or lending of games say Xbox, as you must install all games to the live account and must pay a fee to add to a second account. Clearly an attempt to break the second hand game market and Microsoft will get a nice new cut of any of their used game sales. Apparently retailers will have to agree to Microsoft terms and conditions to sell and when you trade in a game it will be wiped from your Xbox account, part of the must go online every 24 hours functionality no doubt.

Unfortunately the bad news hasn’t stopped there, it appears there will be no self publishing for Xbox one by indy developers a function that seemed key to the PS4(which is good for them as some of the best new games are indy titles). Evidently we were not the only people thoroughly disappointed with Xbox, after the event Microsoft stock dropped 2/3 of a percent and Sony’s went up 9%. This has been followed up by a salvo of Xbox press releases screaming “we’ll do better at E3” which comes as the second most interesting news under the fact that there will be no Nintendo conference at E3 at all this year.

If you want to check out the full conference it’s view able in the list of links below, along with a couple of humorous bits that other people have released concerning the new consoles.

Defiance (AKA Tony Curran Space Badass)

Defiance

If you have been following the twitter feed you are probably aware of the recently started television series Defiance. Starting with it’s two-hour pilot here’s our thought’s on what was good, what was bad and what we hope to expect in the future.

Joshua and Irisa

Defiance if you happened to miss the memo, is an American-Canadian science fiction television series developed by Universal Cable Productions, in collaboration with Trion Worlds, who are also producing an MMO video game of the same name. Breaking it down to its bare bones it’s the story of an ex soldier and his adopted alien daughter living on earth after a war that began after first contact with extraterrestrials. A war that ended with the permanent changing of the planet by some Terra-forming event during the war. Now you must see how after an armistice the different factions and the races can deal with each other, focused around the town of defiance. If you are not fond of spoilers you should stop here and return once you’ve watched the pilot….

Spoiler Alert

Starting with the beautiful visuals seen in the trailers for defiance and the stellar cast including Stephanie Leonidas, Jaime Murray, Tony Curran, Mia Kirshner as well as others. Defiance had a head start, it seemed that it was going to be fantastic and if the pilot is anything to go by it will be. Tony Curran in and of himself lent instant credibility to the series and as Mr Daytak Tarr (or tik tak toe as he shall be affectionately known) he is a cosmic bad ass and a thoroughly gripping character. The dynamic of the Tarr family versus the McCawleys drives the pilots plot and is a wonderful take on Shakespeare’s Montagues and Capulets all be it with a significant twist.

daytak bad ass

One thing I find goes in the series favour as well as possibly against it is the more than passing resemblance to other sci-fi, an issue always tackled within the genre. More than others it particularly reminded me of firefly the gritty feel and even the existence of one famous battle that changed the world. In defiance, the aptly name battle of Defiance marked for acts of compassion as Serenity was for acts of horror. It also for me had a splash of The Tribe and Terra Nova, it would seem amongst this heady group of influences a high bar is already set for the series. One must definitely not mistake this to be a condemnation of the series or an indication that it is lacking in originality. To mention but a few aspects the diversity of alien cultures for example the Castithan dancing. As well as  things such as the Wolf bugs creatures in forests(very weird-looking) were wholly new and interesting.

Doctor and Irisa

I cannot deny that another massive draw for the series for me was Stephanie Leonidas who is playing Irisa Nyira(pictured above with the blade). Harbouring crushes on her since the first time seeing Mirrormask at 15. Luckily she is also a very accomplished actress and only adds to the good in this show including a very cool looking alien make up. We were also pleasantly surprised to see Julie Benz as the new mayor of Defiance, of course memorable for her performance as Darla in Joss Whedon’s Buffy the vampire slayer. Even if it took us a few moments to get through the discontinue of Darla being one of the good guys.

In the pilot among many comedic moments by far the most laugh inducing character was the sassy no-nonsense Doctor Yewell portrayed by Trenna Keating. Her statement “Good Human” after the mayor agrees to do what she says, evoked a chorus of laughter. Other funny moments included  the “grass hopper”, kung fu joke by the former mayor (seemingly future baddy). As well as the defeat of the bio-man 2037 model, by hitting an off switch located in its butt (somehow seems even sillier writing that out).

The Old mayor twist at the very end of the pilot caught us off guard and looks set to create an interesting dynamic for the future. Also watching for the second time her supportive words to her replacement seem much more duplicitous. With all that said it seems set to be very good and for us an added bonus of being the first thing we will be watching on a sofa, on an actual television as it comes out, for a very long time.

This is gonna be good….

RED DWARF X(No, it’s not Porn)

Red Dwarf X

That’s right smeghead the best show in the verse is back after an uncomfortably long time and it’s nothing but awesome. The new tenth season is the first full series in 13 years and looks set to bring about a comeback. After the end of season 8 in 1999 shooting had paused in favour of a feature film, which unfortunately never materialised, and subsequently the new head of the BBC chose not to bring it back for a ninth season. The three part mini series that has been the only thing to come out in the mean time drew the ire of many. We personally found the mini-series enjoyable despite its problems never the less our approach to the new series like many Dwarfers was filled with trepidation.

Costume/No Costume

Luckily we needn’t have worried. Before the start of the new series we had the added enjoyment of the countdown of the show so far leading up to the new episodes on Dave  which rekindled even more of our love for Red Dwarf. From the first rendition of “It’s cold outside….” which we cheerfully sang along to, to the last “Aoooow Yeah” from Cat we were hooked. Despite Craig Charles protestation that he is the only young looking member of the cast, funnily enough they have aged. Luckily this does nothing to detract from the show in any way and they still have the wonderful chemistry that made the show great in the first place. Rumours have also surfaced that in a new series “Red dwarf XI” Norman Lovett the original Holly may return to the show. Making us ecstatic as one of our only issues with the original show was probably the periods of his absence.

You can get access to the show in a number of ways, If your in the UK it is currently showing on the Dave channel. It is also available from iTunes, Netflix and Love Film, as well as a number of less reputable places…..I’m guessing. Loads more Information can be found on the Red Dwarf Website but to wet your appetites below is the series trailer. So what are you waiting for Smeg for Brains get off your arse and start watching.

Evil Dead…..the Musical?

Evil Dead the Musical

In 1981 Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and a rag-tag bunch of others set off on an adventure to create their own feature-length horror film, the film that was to become Evil Dead. Now a cult classic with two equally adored sequels and soon to have a modern remake (produced by Raimi and Campbell), it is no doubt a pillar of the horror genre. So there was obviously only one way to go with the gore-filled master of the one liner that is Evil Dead.

A musical….okay maybe not the obvious next step, but no doubt intriguing. After the work of another young rag-tag bunch, the Evil Dead Musical started it’s life in the back room of a small bar called the Tranzac club in Toronto, Canada  in 2003.

History of Evil Dead the Musical

2004 – Show opened in Montreal as a featured attraction at the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival.

Nov, 2006 – Made it’s off-Broadway debut in New York City.

2006 – Cast album from the show debuted at No 4. on the Billboard show charts.

May, 2007 – Opened at the Diesel Playhouse in Toronto, and became subsequently the longest running Canadian show in Toronto in over two decades.

2007 – Won the Dord Audience Choice award as Toronto’s favourite show.

Present Day – Productions opened in Seoul, Tokyo, Cleveland, Calgary, California, Kalamazoo and many more locations.

More than just a stellar cast, music, and lyrics Evil Dead has another thing going for it that no other musical has, a splatter zone. Like watching Shamu at sea world except with gore bringing you right into the action. With songs like “All the men in my life keep getting killed by Candarian demons” and a great amalgamation of the Evil Dead scripts to dislike this musical is to dislike fun.

To  finish off I leave you with two things first anybody in a situation to bring this production over to the Uk PLEASE DO IT NOW !!!!!!! Information on how to do that is here on the Evil Dead the Musical Website. Secondly in other Evil Dead news, readying for the new adaptation of Evil Dead on the big screen the internet has offered up the perfect snack  Necronomicon Pizza (Pictured Below), you’re welcome.

I could try really hard to write an introduction to this post and All Hallows Read but I would not succeed in doing it any better than the master of storytelling himself, Neil Gaiman…

Zombie Apocalypse plan

Today, with the beginning of October, so starts the count down to Halloween. Having spent large spans of our childhood on the entirely worthwhile endeavor of Zombie movies, we have been inspired to write our very own Zombie Apocalypse Plan. Because lets face it these days what blog is complete without its own Z.A. Plan.  The major impetus for this post is really the fact that we were fairly recently (and horribly lately) brought to the attention of another movie in this genre woody harrelson’s Zom-Com, Zombieland.(Which may have been even better than Shaun of the dead in my opinion). As such having belatedly come to this excellent flik we were motivated to start our Z.A. Plan, so here it goes….

Pre-Apocalypse provisions

Emergency Bag

They key to any Z.A. Plan starts even before “the outbreak”, advised , although for different reasons, by both the government and Sarah Connor (Credit for that joke to the guys at The Big Bang theory) is the Emergency kit, retrofitted only slightly for a Z.A. Below:

Firearm/heavy melee weapon                                      X 1

Medical supplies                                                        full first aid kit plus large quantity of                                                                                          pain killers and antibiotics.

Light weight Rations for 2 weeks                               X 1

Swiss army knife                                                        X 1

Mobile/Satellite phone                                               X 1

Vehicle meanings in a post-apocalyptic world

Another key decision to make before the flesh eating freaks rise up is, who will I be in the Post-Apocalyptic wasteland? Like moving to a new school or new area you can change who your are nothing is holding you back (except some rather scary flesh-eaters). Key to choosing your role in  the “new world” is your vehicle, nothing say more than what your driving, especially after the event.

The Hummer/Land rover – The practical Survivor

The Bus/RV – The comfortable Survivor

The Motorbike – The rogue Zombie Hunter

The Sports Car Mustang/Lamborghini – The stylish survivor

Post Z.A. Steps

Step 1 – secure immediate area and check inventory

Step 2 – Find your best means of transport in the local area and go on a  Shopping trip for sustained survival.

Step 3 – Find your final means of transport (see above), set up amongst your survivor compatriots a short wave radio schedule.

Step 4 – Make effort to set up a permanent base that is stable and defensible for survivors to flock to and save the human race.

Step 5 – SURVIVE

A REVIEW OF GREAT LITERATURE

NEVERWHERE By Neil Gaiman

1.Original Cover with Dave McKean artwork 2.Graphic Novel Cover 3. & 4. Alternate Later release Covers.

This book originated as a novelization of a BBC television serial from the 1990’s by Neil and comedian Lenny Henry. The plot and characters are almost the same as in the series, Except that the novel allowed Gaiman to expand and elaborate on certain elements of the story and restore a few  changes made from the original plan for the televised version.

Tv Show Image Left to Right – Door, Hunter and Richard

Although the novel has done very well, the television series did not do nearly as well suffering from very little international exposure, However it is by far my favourite TV series of all time and definitely worth the watch. The original book cover was art created for the TV series opening credits (Which are awesome) by long time Gaiman collaborator Dave McKean, seen above. The plot follows Richard Mayhew a Scottish gentleman who travels to London, Upon the start of the novel his life seems very ordinary (Isn’t that always the way). However upon meeting a apparently homeless girl he is drawn into a parallel London filled with places and people that have fallen through gaps in time. Bound together this parallel world has its own rules and an eery connection to the London underground map. There’s the girl, named Door, and people are trying to kill her. There’s an angel called Islington and Old Bailey who lives among the rooftops. There are intelligent rats and rat speakers, and an earl who holds court on an underground train, and more dangers and delights that are beyond imagining. If you have not been living under a rock you are probably aware of Mr Gaiman’s work even if you had not accredited it to him(examples of which are below). Neverwhere stands for me as the pinnacle of his body of work which is exceptional already.

ENDER’S GAME By Orson Scott Card

Ender’s Game is a science fiction novel by Orson Scott Card. Set in Earth’s future, the novel begins on a future earth where the human race has barely survived two conflicts with a race of insectoid aliens, normally called “Buggers”. In preparation for an anticipated third invasion by the buggers, an international Space fleet maintains a school to find and train future fleet commanders. This school is known as Battle school and as the novel begins Ender Wiggin, the novels protagonist, is offered a place at this prestigious institution. Along side the main story through other characters the novel also portrays the political turmoil beginning on the planet that was supposedly subsided by the previous invasions.

The book originated as the short story “Ender’s Game”, published in the August 1977 issue of Analog Science Fiction and Fact. Elaborating on characters and plot lines depicted in the novel, Card later wrote additional books to form the Ender’s Game series. Ender’s Game won the 1985 Nebula Award for best novel and the 1986 Hugo Award for best novel. Card released an updated version of Ender’s Game in 1991, changing some political facts to accurately reflect the times. A film adaptation of the same name directed by Gavin Hood and co-produced by Card himself is planned for release on November 1, 2013. I await this incarnation with anticipation and dread, put the difficulties of capturing this novel with all of its intricacies aside and there has still been some rather bizarre casting choices. Although I wish to be disproved, I’m calling it now, this film is likely to be a massive disappointment of “Prometheus” levels.

Release Date – 1985/1991

WORLD WAR Z By Max Brooks

World War Z is quite possibly the greatest post-apocalyptic Zombie horror novel. By Max Brooks, it follows up his 2003 book, The Zombie Survival Guide, a how to guide for the zombie apocalypse. World War Z is supposedly a collection of individual accounts in the form of first-person anecdotes surrounding the characters experiences of the zombie apocalypse. The set up for the book is that Brooks writes as an agent of the United Nations Postwar Commission, who published the book as a report a decade after the ten-year Zombie War. The United Nations supposedly left much of his research out of the official report, choosing to focus on facts and figures from the war rather than the individual stories that form the bulk of Brooks’ novel.

The audio book version, performed by a full cast including Alan Alda, Mark Hamill and John Turturro, won an Audie Award in 2007. A film based upon the book is in production, and is set for a June 2013 release. Unlike Ender’s game a film based on this brilliant book fills me with nothing but excitement.

LIES OF LOCK LAMORA By Scott Lynch

The Lies of Locke Lamora is a fantasy novel by Scott Lynch. It follows the adventures of a group of con artists known as the Gentlemen Bastards. They live in a city called Camorr, Imagine Hustle in medieval Venice throw in a complex system of gang culture and magic and you get an idea of this book.

The Lies of Locke Lamora is the first book in a projected series of seven, the third of which Republic of Thieves is due to come out some time in the next 12 months. It is by far the most wonderfully original and Intelligent fantasy novel i’ve read in a long time and I hope you too can soon enjoy the torture of waiting for future installments which Scott Lynch releases at destressingly long intervals.

NIGHT WATCH By Sergei Lukyanenko

Night Watch is a fantasy novel by Russian writer Sergei Lukyanenko published in 1998. The story revolves around a confrontation between two opposing supernatural groups, known as “Others”, the Night Watch is an organization dedicated to policing the actions of the Dark Others and their counterparts the Day Watch, which polices the actions of the Light Others. The story follows primarily the life of Anton Gorodetsky a low-ranking member of the night watch who steadily gets entangled in the plans of the dark others which are way above his pay grade. It is a completely new and interesting look at the hidden paranormal world in plain sight idea that will have you screaming for more.

The novel is first in a pentalogy that continues with Day Watch, Twilight Watch, Final Watch, and New Watch. The first story of the novel, Destiny, was made into a successful Russian film, Night Watch, which, although keeping the characters and many of the events of the original novel, alters some significant elements of the story. It also had a sequel which completely diverged from the plot of the novels and had very little success.

SERIES SPECIAL PICK

THE DRESDEN FILES By Jim Butcher

The Dresden Files is a series fantasy/mystery novels written by Jim Butcher. Each story follows the point of view of the main character, private investigator and wizard Harry Dresden, as he  investigates into supernatural disturbances in modern-day Chicago. Butcher’s original proposed title for the first novel was “Semiautomagic” Which gives you a good feel for the novels. Starting with Storm Front there are now 13 novels with number 14 Cold days due to hit stores November 27 of this year.

In 2007, a television series based on the novels, also called The Dresden Files, aired for one season on the American Sci-Fi Channel. It changed a few details which were quite grating and didn’t do well thus not meriting a second season. One great thing from the television series was the portrayal of Bob a spirit imbued with unfathomable amounts of information bound to a skull, who is also a fan of bodice ripper fiction and a disdain for most of humanity. What was a great character in this book series is wonderfully portrayed in the television adaptation by Terrence Mann (pictured below).

Bob Spirit of information and lover of trashy romance novels. AKA Terrence Mann.

What is wonderful about this series is that once you pick up any of the novels you are instantly immersed even after multiple readings of the same one I still gain large ammounts of enjoyment from them. Upon reading them for the first they are engrossing to the point of damage to personal and professional life during the 2 days hunched over your copy. One of the most easy and enjoyable reads that i have ever experienced.

London Film and Comic-Con

We’ve just about got through the convention season with the heavy hitters of SDCC in the United states and LFCC here in the UK. Here all our info on the convention here in London as well as a brief look at some interesting things that have made their way from across the pond.

LFCC held at the Olympia had much of what we have come to expect from the event. Hordes of people at Earls court station wearing culturally referenced T-shirts and basic to mind-blowing Cosplay followed by the inevitability of queuing inside and out. Amongst the plethora of Cosplayer’s seeing “Fat Vader” and a Storm Trooper racing across the floor desperately in need of a pee was thoroughly enjoyable. Although Cosplay has always looked like fun, it’s an experience currently very foreign to us. Largely because we’ve never had the dedication to do it and we’re made up of not quite the right kind of attention whores for now.

The highlight of the event was the new “Dredd” panel made up of Karl Urban(Judge Dredd), Alex Garland(writer), Mark Simpson(Artist) and Allon Reich(Producer). As fans of both the comics and the Stallone film, be it as entirely separate creatures, we were very wary going into the panel for this reboot. As it goes the panel actually allayed many of our fears and left us excited to see the flik. Karl Urban’s revelation that actually he had been a fan since childhood went a long way to help in this. This panel also revealed previously unseen footage of the movie which was very impressive and filled with a perfect Dredd sense of humour. Also the panel expanded on the use of the Slow-mo drug in the movie that slows perception to 1% of normal speed, which twinned with the 3D technology may be the first sensible use since the beginning of this stupid craze.

Best buys from this years LFCC came down to two signings and two stall buys. The two signings were Dave Prowse and Kenny Baker. Furthering our attempts to get signings from all of the surviving Star Wars cast (a pipe dream me thinks). Kenny and Dave were both lovely and upon revealing our 1977 annual Kenny remarked “ooh that’s an old one” which made us stupidly happy. The two best buys were a 1 litre Giant Doctor Who mug to perpetuate an already unhealthy caffeine addiction and a V mask from love of the V for vendetta movie. Possible future Halloween costume, and possible future political statement wrapped up under one banner.

Upon returning home, feet aching and weighed down by a bag of swag, our new mission began to hunt down the trickle-down Information and videos from LFCC’s American counterparts. Obviously the super-power of the convention circuit is SDCC, but it would probably be redundant to talk about it here, especially as there are many better informed sources across the inter-web. However one thing we want to stress is the importance and greatness of the event concurrent to SDCC in Nerd Hq.

If you are unaware of The Nerdmachine it is a web-based company founded by David Coleman and actor Zachary Levi (Chuck, Flynn Rider and soon to be Fandral), to celebrate and perpetuate Nerd culture. Nerd Hq is their small panel and gaming based convention held alongside San Diego Comic-Con to raise money for the charity Operation Smile.

Being based in the UK one of the many great things about this Con specifically is that all the panels were streamed live and were also recorded and are available at the The Nerdmachine website. Joss Whedon fan nominated “King of the Con” had his very own panel (Available here) which was just one of many wonderfully entertaining examples at Nerd Hq. During which Joss named Zachary Levi joint king of the con, for the greatness of this event both humanitarian and in its awesomeness.

All in all we thoroughly enjoyed the summer convention season and are looking forward to the madness all over again next year!
